Jacob Holdt: Pray for America

Jacob Holdt’s first solo exhibition with V1 Gallery, Pray for America, presents 44 selected photographs from Holdt’s archive of more than 15.000 photographs, shot during his vagabonding years in America between 1970-1978. Key examples are flanked by photographs never previously shown.

Each photograph is accompanied by a caption in the exhibition catalogue published by Trojan Horse Press / V1 Gallery. The illustrated odyssey American Pictures was first published in Danish in 1977 (in English in 1985). Holdt has travelled worldwide with his dias lecture ever since. Holdt’s first edition of his memoirs 1947-1977 “Om at sige ja” was published by Politiken on October 10, 2019. As the first Dane to collaborate with Supreme, a new t-shirt features Holdt’s iconic photograph of the sex worker Cynthia posing in front of a billboard (Las Vegas, Nevada, 1975). In 2009, Holdt was awarded the life grant from the Danish Arts Foundation. V1 Gallery represented Holdt at Paris Photo in 2017. Holdt has mounted solo exhibitions at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, Denmark (2016) and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark (2010).”
